Lake Pátzcuaro, its placid waters dotted with islands, is one of the highest lakes in the country. Around the lakeshore, several Tarasco villages are located, some of the accessible only by boat.

Fishing is the main occupation and, although once the main tool for local fishermen, the traditional "butterfly" nets now appear mostly for photographers.
